Sonilo vs Suno vs Udio: Choosing Music for a Video

Start with the asset you need to deliver. Sonilo provides a video-input soundtrack workflow; Suno's Custom mode accepts your own lyrics. For a project that needs an exported audio file, check Udio's availability first: its official transition notice currently says audio, video, and stem downloads are disabled. Udio's download notice.
Provider information checked September 21, 2026. Sonilo publishes this comparison and sells one of these products. The workflow recommendations below are based on documented features; we did not run a new head-to-head listening test for this article.
Match the starting point to the job
| Your starting point | What to evaluate | Why it is relevant |
|---|---|---|
| A finished video needing a soundtrack | Sonilo's video-to-music workflow | It accepts MP4/MOV input and offers duration and direction controls. Product interface [1] |
| Lyrics for a song that will accompany a video | Suno Custom mode | Its documented lyric-entry workflow directly addresses that starting task. Custom-mode documentation [2] |
| An existing Udio project you want to develop and share by link | Udio's transition-era creation tools | Official guidance describes continued extending, remixing, Styles, and URL sharing. Confirm the current transition conditions. Udio workflow guidance [3] |

These are reasons to evaluate a workflow, not evidence that one service makes better-sounding music. Choose around the work you need to do next.
Use the hard-constraint selector
This selector does not rank sound quality. It removes options that cannot satisfy the current deliverable, then identifies the most direct workflow to evaluate. Apply the rules from top to bottom and stop when a hard constraint fails.
| Project fact | Rule | Current result | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| The editor must receive a downloadable audio file now | Exclude a service when its official documentation says the required export is unavailable | Udio is excluded for this deliverable while audio downloads remain disabled | Udio download notice [1] |
| The starting asset is a locked or near-locked video | Evaluate a workflow that accepts the video itself before a prompt-only song workflow | Evaluate Sonilo's video-input workflow; this is a workflow fit, not a quality win | Sonilo video-to-music [2] |
| The starting asset is original lyrics for a standalone song | Evaluate a documented lyric-entry workflow first | Evaluate Suno Custom mode | Suno Custom-mode documentation [3] |
| The project needs negotiated exclusivity, stems, or bespoke revision rights | Do not infer those rights from a standard plan label | None of these public workflow summaries clears the requirement; obtain a specific agreement | Sonilo Terms [4], Suno Terms [5], and Udio transition guidance [6] |

Worked examples show how the same selector can return different candidates. A locked product demo that needs an exported soundtrack points to evaluating Sonilo. A lyric-led theme song points to evaluating Suno. An existing Udio project can remain a fit when URL sharing is sufficient, but not when the editor requires a downloadable file under the current notice. A client requiring negotiated exclusivity returns no automatic winner until the contract requirement is resolved.
For a locked edit, review the reveal, the narration, and the ending. For a song-led video, begin with the song structure and lyric delivery. Those are different creative decisions even when the finished assets appear in the same video editor.
If the missing sound is a footstep, UI click, or impact, treat that as a separate sound-design job. Sonilo has a video-to-SFX workflow; this music comparison does not establish a cross-provider SFX ranking.
Check delivery and permission before committing
With Sonilo, verify the plan that generated the output and the applicable Terms. Commercial permission is plan-dependent and does not settle exclusivity, copyright protection, or third-party clearance. Sonilo's output-rights terms.
Suno's paid-plan help describes commercial rights for songs downloaded while subscribed. Its Terms additionally require a permitted download through an approved channel within the applicable allocation; remixes have separate restrictions. Review the exact output and feature rather than treating every paid-account song as equivalent. Paid-plan help, Suno Terms effective September 3, 2026.
Udio's download restriction is a delivery constraint, not a finding about musical quality or an interpretation of all commercial rights. A shareable project link does not replace an exported file when an editor needs to assemble a final soundtrack. Recheck the official download notice before choosing it for that job.
For YouTube releases, commercial permission and platform matching should be checked separately. Use the YouTube music and Content ID guide for that release workflow.
What the Sonilo–Suno benchmark actually measures
The pinned MusicCaps results compare Sonilo Music v1.1 with Suno v5.5 on text-to-music metrics. We inspected the public repository tree at the pinned commit and found no identifiable generated comparison bundle, item manifest, raw per-item results, or uncertainty artifact. That is a bounded observation about the public commit, not evidence that no private materials exist.
| Reported metric; higher is better | Sonilo v1.1 | Suno v5.5 |
|---|---|---|
| CLAP | 0.2850 | 0.2641 |
| AudioBox CE | 7.4207 | 7.3386 |
| AudioBox CU | 7.8808 | 7.9931 |
| AudioBox PC | 5.8673 | 6.0027 |
| AudioBox PQ | 7.9954 | 8.1066 |
These selected rows show mixed directions; the repository also reports KL, Inception Score, and Fréchet distances. It does not supply the generated comparison set, actual run sample count, or uncertainty needed to establish reliable differences. It does not test video-cut alignment, include Udio, or measure listener preference. No overall quality advantage is established here. Full results at the pinned commit, pinned repository tree.
When Sonilo is not the first workflow to choose
If your immediate task is entering lyrics for a standalone song, Suno's documented Custom mode is a more direct starting point than the Sonilo video-upload flow compared here. That is a workflow-fit recommendation, not a claim that Sonilo cannot generate songs. Suno lyric-entry workflow.
If you are continuing a Udio project and URL sharing meets the deliverable, its existing creation tools may suit that job without switching services. If you need bespoke composition or negotiated rights, establish those requirements with a composer or provider before picking a generator.
